Calibrate Desk View Angles in macOS 13
Desk View utilizes the Ultra Wide camera on a connected iPhone to simulate an overhead camera angle of your physical workspace without requiring an expensive multi-camera setup. This guide explains how to properly set up, calibrate, and adjust the framing angles of Desk View in macOS 13 Ventura using built-in digital controls and physical adjustments to ensure your desk items are clearly visible during calls and presentations.
1. Mount and Position Your iPhone
Ensure your iPhone (iPhone 11 or later) is running iOS 16 or later and mounted securely to the top of your Mac display in landscape orientation. For optimal angle calibration, center the iPhone above the display. The Ultra Wide lens needs an unobstructed line of sight angled downward toward the surface in front of your Mac.
2. Launch the Desk View Interface
You can access Desk View calibration controls through two methods:
- Via Control Center: Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, select Video Effects, and click Desk View.
- Via Applications: Open Finder, navigate to Applications, and launch the standalone Desk View app.
3. Adjust the Digital Calibration Frame
When Desk View launches, an alignment setup window appears showing the raw overhead capture:
- Resize the Desk Frame: Use the on-screen slider at the bottom of the calibration window to zoom in or out. This digitally expands or contracts the captured area of your desk.
- Reposition the Workspace: Click and drag the visible frame within the window to center the active area where your hands, keyboard, or demonstration materials sit.
4. Fine-Tune the Physical Angle
If the digital framing tool cuts off part of your workspace:
- Tilt the Display: Gently tilt your Mac’s display forward or backward. Desk View applies perspective correction, but tilting the screen adjusts the baseline angle of the Ultra Wide camera.
- Adjust the Mount: If using a magnetic mount with an adjustable hinge, tilt the iPhone slightly forward to prioritize objects closer to the keyboard, or backward to capture a deeper area of your desk.
5. Confirm and Start Desk View
Once the preview correctly captures your workspace:
- Click the Start Desk View button at the bottom right of the calibration window.
- A floating Desk View window will appear. You can now resize this window, drag it across spaces, or select it as a screen-sharing source in apps like FaceTime, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex.
If you need to recalibrate the angle during a call, click the Desk View icon in the menu bar and select the setup option to return to the calibration controls.
