Adjust Split Screen Ratio in macOS 13

macOS 13 Ventura allows users to customize the size ratio of side-by-side windows using the native Split View feature. While windows initially open in a 50/50 arrangement, you can easily shift the divider to allocate more screen real estate to one application over another. This guide covers how to set up Split View, resize the split ratio, and understand the display limitations of certain applications.

How to Adjust Split View Ratio

Once two applications are placed into Split View, adjusting their proportion on the screen requires just a single action:

  1. Move your cursor to the black vertical divider line separating the two tiled windows.
  2. The cursor will transform into a double-sided horizontal arrow with a line down the middle.
  3. Click and drag the divider bar left or right to change the width of the windows.
  4. Release the mouse button or trackpad when the windows are at your desired ratio.

The windows will automatically resize in real-time, maintaining their new proportions until you exit Split View or move the divider again.

Setting Up Split View in macOS 13

If you are not already in Split View, follow these steps to place two windows side by side:

  1. Open the two applications you want to use.
  2. Hover your mouse over the green full-screen button in the top-left corner of the first window (do not click).
  3. Select either Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen from the pop-up menu.
  4. Click the second application window on the opposite side of the screen to fill the remaining space.

Minimum Size Constraints

While you can adjust the ratio freely, macOS 13 enforces minimum window widths defined by app developers. If an application requires a fixed minimum width to properly display its contents, the divider will stop moving once it hits that threshold. When this occurs, you cannot shrink that specific window any further, though you can still make it larger by dragging the divider in the opposite direction.

How to Exit Split View

To return your screen to normal:

  1. Move your cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the window title bar and menu options.
  2. Click the green button in either window.
  3. That window will exit Split View and return to its standard desktop size, while the remaining window will expand to full-screen mode.
