What Happens When You Hide an App in iOS 18?

In iOS 18, Apple introduced a dedicated privacy feature that allows users to lock and hide individual applications from plain sight. Moving an app to the Hidden Apps folder removes its icon from your Home Screen, silences its notifications, conceals it from system-wide searches, and stores it in a secure, biometrically locked folder at the bottom of your App Library.

Removal from the Home Screen and App Library

When an app is marked as hidden, its icon disappears entirely from your Home Screen pages. It is also removed from standard App Library categories. Instead, it is transferred exclusively into a locked "Hidden" folder located at the very bottom of the App Library. The folder icon appears blurred and displays no app previews or notification indicators.

Biometric and Passcode Protection

The Hidden folder cannot be opened without authentication. Accessing the contents requires:

  • Face ID
  • Touch ID
  • Your device passcode

Even if your iPhone is already unlocked and in someone else's hands, they cannot view the contents of the Hidden folder without passing this secondary biometric or passcode verification.

Notifications and Badges Are Silenced

To prevent sensitive information from appearing on your Lock Screen or Dynamic Island, iOS 18 disables standard alerts for hidden apps:

  • Banners and Alerts: Push notifications are completely suppressed.
  • Lock Screen: No alerts, summaries, or banners will display.
  • Notification Center: Incoming messages or activity from hidden apps will not appear in your history.
  • Badge Counts: Unread counts are concealed; you will not see red notification badges anywhere on your device.

Concealment from Spotlight and Siri

Once hidden, the app is scrubbed from the system's discovery features:

  • Spotlight Search: Typing the app's name into the Search bar will yield no results.
  • Siri Suggestions: The app will not appear as a suggested action, widget, or shortcut.
  • App Library Search: Searching alphabetically in the App Library will exclude the hidden app.

System Settings and Storage Visibility

While the app is completely hidden from daily navigation, it remains installed on your device. It will still occupy storage space and remain visible under Settings > General > iPhone Storage, as well as within the main list of apps in the Settings menu. However, opening the app's dedicated settings page may require authentication depending on the app's permission level.

How to Access or Unhide the App

To access the app:

  1. Swipe left through your Home Screen pages until you reach the App Library.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom and tap the Hidden folder.
  3. Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  4. Tap the app to launch it.

To restore the app to normal visibility, authenticate to open the Hidden folder, long-press the app icon, and select Don't Require Face ID (or Touch ID/Passcode). The app will return to your standard App Library, where you can drag it back onto your Home Screen.
