What Happens When Phone App Is Locked in iOS 18?

In iOS 18, Apple introduced the ability to lock individual applications behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, including native apps like the Phone app. When the Phone app is locked, incoming call alerts continue to ring and display on your screen normally, allowing you to answer or decline calls without entering biometric authentication. However, all sensitive data within the app—such as your call history, voicemail, and contacts—remains strictly guarded until you authenticate.

Incoming Call Behavior

When someone calls an iPhone with a locked Phone app:

  • Real-Time Alerts Appear: Incoming calls trigger the standard full-screen or banner notification. You will hear the ringtone and feel the vibration as usual.
  • Caller Identification Displays: If the caller is saved in your contacts or identified by caller ID, their name and number will still appear on the incoming call screen.
  • Answering Calls: You can swipe to answer or tap to decline the call immediately. You do not need to scan Face ID or enter a passcode to answer an incoming phone call.

Post-Call Privacy and App Access

The privacy protections take effect as soon as the interaction moves past the active call screen:

  • No Access to the App Interface: Once the call ends, your iPhone will not drop you into the Phone app. Tapping the Phone app icon at any point still triggers a Face ID or passcode prompt.
  • Call Recents Remain Hidden: Missed calls, recent incoming calls, and outgoing call logs are not visible from the home screen, and the recents list inside the app cannot be viewed without unlocking it.
  • Voicemail and Contacts: Voicemail messages and the internal contacts tab remain inaccessible until the authentication requirement is cleared.

Lock vs. Hide Restrictions

While iOS 18 allows users to both lock and hide many third-party apps in a private folder, core system apps have restrictions. The Phone app can be locked, but it cannot be hidden. This ensures the device maintains fundamental telephony functions and guarantees that incoming emergency and standard communications are never suppressed or missed.
