Sync Offline Topo Maps on iPhone and Apple Watch

With iOS 18 and watchOS 11, Apple introduced dedicated topographic maps and expanded offline navigation features for outdoor enthusiasts. When you download an offline map region or create a custom hiking route on an iPhone running iOS 18, that map data automatically syncs to your paired Apple Watch. This allows you to view detailed contour lines, trail networks, elevation profiles, and turn-by-turn directions directly on your wrist, even when you have no cellular service or your iPhone is left behind.

How the Sync Process Works

The synchronization between iPhone and Apple Watch occurs automatically in the background using Apple's proximity and local network protocols:

  1. Initiate on iPhone: In the Apple Maps app on iOS 18, search for an area, tap More (...) > Download Offline Map, adjust the boundary, and tap Download. You can also browse National Parks, select specific trails, or create custom walking routes and select Save for Offline.
  2. Background Data Transfer: Once the download completes on your iPhone, iOS 18 automatically begins transferring the cached vector data—including topographic contours and trail metadata—to the Apple Watch over Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi.
  3. Charger Priority: For larger regions, watchOS prioritizes syncing map tiles when the Apple Watch is placed on its charger and connected to Wi-Fi to preserve battery life.

Standalone Navigation on Apple Watch

Once the sync is complete, the Apple Watch no longer relies on the iPhone's data connection:

  • Independent GPS: The watch utilizes its internal GPS receiver alongside the locally stored topographic vector maps to provide real-time location tracking.
  • Trail Alerts and Contours: You can pan across contour lines, check elevation gains, and receive off-route notifications directly from watchOS 11 without cellular reception.
  • Workouts Integration: If you begin a hike or outdoor walk workout, the Workout app links seamlessly with the saved topographic map, letting you view your route progress and trail markers simultaneously.

Requirements and Storage Management

To ensure offline topographic maps sync properly:

  • System Compatibility: Your iPhone must run iOS 18 or later, and your Apple Watch must run watchOS 11 (compatible with Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE 2nd generation, Apple Watch Ultra, and later).
  • Storage Limitations: Offline maps, especially those with rich topographic data, consume onboard storage. You can check available space in the Watch app on iPhone under General > Storage.
  • Managing Maps: To remove synced maps from both devices, delete the offline region in the Apple Maps app on your iPhone under your profile account menu. Removing the map on your iPhone automatically removes the synced data from your Apple Watch.
