Store Secure Notes in iOS 18 Passwords App

Apple's standalone Passwords app in iOS 18 allows users to store secure text notes directly alongside saved login credentials. This built-in feature lets you safely record account recovery codes, security question answers, PINs, or account-specific reminders within the same encrypted entry as your username and password. All attached notes are protected by end-to-end encryption and synchronize across your Apple devices using iCloud Keychain.

How to Add Notes to an Existing Login

To attach a secure note to a credential you have already saved:

  1. Open the Passwords app on your iPhone running iOS 18.
  2. Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
  3. Tap the All category or search for the specific account you want to update.
  4. Select the account entry to view its details.
  5. Tap Edit in the top-right corner of the screen.
  6. Scroll down to the Notes field.
  7. Type or paste your confidential text into the box.
  8. Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your changes.

How to Add Notes When Creating a New Credential

If you are manually adding a new account:

  1. Open the Passwords app and tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Enter the website, username, and password.
  3. Tap inside the Notes section and enter your text.
  4. Tap Save to create the entry.

Security and Search Capabilities

Notes stored in the Passwords app inherit the same protection standards as your passwords. They are protected behind biometric authentication and encrypted end-to-end via iCloud Keychain, ensuring that even Apple cannot read the contents.

Additionally, the text inside your notes is indexed within the Passwords app search bar. If you search for a keyword or reference phrase included in a note, the corresponding account entry will appear in your search results, making it easy to retrieve specific account details quickly.
