With the rollout of iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence, Apple has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT directly into Siri to handle complex, broad-knowledge requests beyond Siri's native capabilities. This integration allows users to access advanced generative AI directly through voice commands or the "Type to Siri" interface without needing to manually open a dedicated third-party app.

Automated Query Routing and Handoff

When a user asks Siri a question that requires deep world knowledge, detailed creative writing, or complex problem-solving, Siri can automatically offer to delegate the task to ChatGPT. Before any data is transmitted, Siri prompts the user with an on-screen confirmation, asking if they would like to send the query to ChatGPT. Once approved, ChatGPT processes the prompt and returns the answer directly within the Siri interface.

Multimodal Input: Photos and Documents

Siri’s ChatGPT integration supports multimodal inputs, allowing users to attach visual or textual media directly to their queries:

Users have two distinct configuration modes within iOS 18 settings under Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT:

  • Free (No Account Required): Users can access ChatGPT at no cost without logging in. Under this mode, IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI does not store requests or use the data to train its models.
  • ChatGPT Plus Account Linking: Users with paid OpenAI subscriptions can log into their existing ChatGPT Plus accounts. This enables higher rate limits, access to the latest frontier models, and synchronization with their OpenAI account preferences.

Apple provides full control over the integration:
