Save Math Notes to the Files App in iOS 18

Apple’s iOS 18 introduces Math Notes across the Calculator and Notes apps, allowing users to write and automatically solve mathematical expressions by hand. While these sheets are stored inside the Notes ecosystem by default, several built-in methods allow you to export and save your handwritten Math Notes directly to the Files app as organized PDFs or images.

Method 1: Export Directly via the Share Sheet

The quickest way to send an entire Math Note to the Files app as a PDF document is through the native Share Sheet.

  1. Open the Notes or Calculator app and navigate to your saved Math Note.
  2. Tap the Share icon (a square with an upward arrow) located in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll down the action list and select Save to Files.
  4. Choose your preferred storage location, such as iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, select a specific folder, and tap Save.

Method 2: Convert to a Clean PDF via the Print Menu

If the standard export alters your handwritten layout or adds unwanted margins, the Print preview creates a standardized, print-ready PDF layout.

  1. Open the Math Note you wish to save.
  2. Tap the Share icon and select Print.
  3. In the print preview screen, perform a reverse-pinch gesture (zoom in) on the page preview, or tap the Share icon in the top corner of the print dialog.
  4. Select Save to Files from the resulting menu to store the generated document directly into your directory.

Method 3: Full-Page Screenshot to PDF

For Math Notes created via the Calculator app’s dynamic canvas, capturing a full-page screenshot guarantees that the exact visual state of your variables and graphs is preserved.

  1. Open the Math Note sheet on your screen.
  2. Take a screenshot by pressing the Side button and Volume Up button simultaneously.
  3. Tap the screenshot thumbnail in the lower-left corner before it disappears.
  4. Select the Full Page tab at the top of the editing screen.
  5. Tap Done in the top-left corner and choose Save PDF to Files.

Method 4: Drag and Drop (iPadOS 18 and iOS Multitasking)

If you manage files side-by-side using Split View or Stage Manager on iPadOS 18, or rapid app-switching on iOS:

  1. Open the Files app to the desired destination folder alongside your Math Note.
  2. Long-press the handwritten equation, graph, or the note entry itself from the list.
  3. Drag the item directly into the open Files window and release to save it as an exported asset.
