Safari Highlights for Travel Booking in iOS 18

In iOS 18, Apple introduced Safari Highlights, an intelligent browsing feature powered by on-device machine learning that automatically identifies and extracts relevant information from web pages. When browsing travel booking websites, Safari Highlights detects critical location details—such as hotel addresses, points of interest, and landmarks—and displays them in a streamlined, interactive summary card directly in the address bar, removing the need to manually hunt for logistical information across lengthy booking pages.

Safari Highlights identifies location-based data through semantic parsing and entity recognition. As a travel booking page loads, the browser’s background algorithms detect structured data, standard address formats, and business profiles embedded in the site's code. When a verified location is recognized, a small indicator appears in the Smart Search field, signaling that contextual information is ready for viewing.

Tapping the Highlights icon opens a modular information card over the webpage. For hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals, this card aggregates key details into a single interface:

  • Interactive Map Previews: A miniature Apple Maps view renders the exact coordinates of the property, allowing travelers to instantly evaluate the neighborhood, proximity to transit, or distance from nearby attractions without leaving the browser tab.
  • One-Tap Navigation: The card includes an integrated "Directions" button that links directly to Apple Maps, letting users immediately route travel times from an airport or train station.
  • Direct Contact and Hours: Key contact metadata—such as front-desk phone numbers and check-in or office hours—is extracted and turned into actionable buttons.

This feature eliminates the common friction of copying addresses back and forth between Safari and navigation apps while comparing accommodations. Because the processing occurs locally on the device using iOS 18 architecture, the extraction happens instantly while maintaining privacy, ensuring that browsing history and travel plans remain strictly on the user's iPhone.
