Roadside Assistance via Satellite in iOS 18
Apple's Roadside Assistance via Satellite in iOS 18 enables iPhone users to request vehicular help when stranded outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. While many drivers carry roadside assistance through private auto-insurance carriers, the native iOS satellite interface does not directly integrate individual auto-insurance companies. Instead, the feature routes emergency requests through designated roadside dispatch partners, allowing users to either use existing partner memberships, pay per incident, or seek reimbursement later from their personal auto insurance.
Supported Roadside Assistance Providers
When initiating a satellite roadside request in iOS 18, users are presented with region-specific partner options rather than a list of standard auto-insurance companies:
- AAA (United States): Available to both existing AAA members and non-members. AAA members enter their membership details to have services covered according to their plan. Non-members can use the service on a pay-per-use basis.
- Verizon Roadside Assistance (United States): Available to Verizon wireless customers and non-customers nationwide. Active subscribers can utilize their plan benefits, while non-subscribers can pay per service call.
- Green Flag (United Kingdom): The primary roadside partner in the UK, offering assistance to both members and pay-as-you-go motorists.
Using Personal Auto Insurance Coverage
Major auto insurers—such as State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, and Allstate—cannot be selected directly through the satellite messaging interface. However, drivers who pay for roadside coverage through their auto-insurance policies can still leverage the feature:
- Pay Per Incident: Select either AAA or Verizon (in the US) through the satellite connection and agree to the pay-per-incident fee charged by the provider.
- Obtain an Itemized Receipt: Once service is complete, the provider issues a digital or physical invoice detailing the services rendered (e.g., towing, tire change, lockout, fuel delivery, or jump-start).
- Submit for Reimbursement: File a roadside claim through your personal auto-insurance provider by submitting the receipt. Most insurance policies that include roadside assistance permit out-of-network reimbursement up to specified policy limits.
How to Access Roadside Assistance via Satellite
To initiate a request on an iPhone 14 or later running iOS 18:
- Open the Messages app when outside of cellular and Wi-Fi range.
- Start a new message and type "Roadside" in the recipient field, or access the option via the Satellite Connection assistant in Settings or Control Center.
- Tap Roadside Assistance.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to an available satellite.
- Answer a series of structured questions regarding your situation (e.g., flat tire, out of fuel, mechanical breakdown, or stuck vehicle).
- Select the available provider (such as AAA or Verizon), confirm your location, and send the request.
