Reminders in iOS 18 Calendar Month and Week Views

In iOS 18, Apple natively integrated the Reminders app directly into the Calendar app, allowing users to view, manage, and complete scheduled tasks alongside traditional calendar events. This article explains how these reminder items are visually represented, structured, and interacted with across both the Month and Week schedule views in the iOS 18 Calendar interface.

Visual Styling of Reminders

Reminders are styled distinctly from standard calendar events to avoid confusion while maintaining visual harmony:

  • Checkbox Icons: Every reminder entry includes a circular checkbox icon next to its title, distinguishing it from the solid color bars or dots used for standard events.
  • Color Coding: Reminders adopt the color assigned to their specific list in the Reminders app, rather than the calendar's layer color.
  • Completion State: Tapping the circular icon immediately marks the reminder as complete, applying a strikethrough effect or fading the entry depending on user settings.

Rendering in Month View

The Month view displays reminders based on how the user chooses to navigate the calendar:

  • Compact Monthly Grid: In the standard month overview, days with scheduled reminders display a dot or a miniature colored icon corresponding to the reminder’s parent list, alongside normal event indicators.
  • Split/Details View: When a specific day is selected in Month view, the lower half of the screen expands to show the daily agenda. Reminders appear chronologically alongside calendar events. Timed reminders are placed at their specific hour, while all-day reminders populate an organized list at the top of the day’s schedule.

Rendering in Week View

When switching to Week view (accessible by rotating the iPhone to landscape or viewing the multi-day timeline on larger displays), reminders are mapped according to their time parameters:

  • Timed Reminders: If a reminder has an assigned due time, it renders directly inside the corresponding time slot on the vertical hourly grid. It takes up a compact block with its circular completion icon and title clearly visible.
  • All-Day Reminders: Tasks without a specific due time are anchored in the "All-Day" shelf pinned at the top of the daily columns, grouped alongside all-day events.
  • Overlapping Schedules: If a reminder shares an exact time with a calendar event, the view splits the horizontal space of that time slot, showing the event and the task side by side.

Interactivity and Controls

Interaction with reminders inside Calendar goes beyond passive viewing:

  • Direct Editing: Tapping a reminder opens a detail card where the title, due date, priority, and parent list can be modified without switching to the Reminders app.
  • Drag-and-Drop Rescheduling: Users can press and hold a reminder in the schedule view to drag it to a different time slot or day.
  • Visibility Toggles: Reminders can be shown or hidden at any time by tapping "Calendars" at the bottom of the screen and toggling the "Reminders" section on or off.
