RCS Group Management Between iOS 18 and Android

With the rollout of iOS 18, Apple added support for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) Universal Profile, enabling a much richer messaging experience between iPhone and Android users. While this cross-platform integration allows participants to name group chats, full admin management—such as assigning specific admin roles or restricting who can remove members—is currently not supported across the two operating systems.

Group Chat Naming

RCS supports group naming across iOS 18 and Android. Any participant in the conversation, whether using Apple Messages or Google Messages, can set or edit the group chat's name. Once changed, the new title syncs across all devices in the thread, replacing the standard list of participant names.

Adding and Leaving Chats

Cross-platform RCS handles member participation with basic self-service controls:

  • Adding Members: Any participant on iOS or Android can typically add new contacts to an existing RCS group.
  • Leaving Groups: Individual users can choose to leave the group chat at any time without terminating the conversation for the remaining participants.
  • Removing Others: Standard RCS does not consistently allow one participant to kick or remove another participant from the chat.

Admin Management Capabilities

True admin management does not exist in cross-platform RCS chats between iOS 18 and Android:

  • No Admin Roles: There is no concept of a group owner, moderator, or admin. Everyone in the chat has equal permissions.
  • No Permission Controls: You cannot restrict who is allowed to change the group name, add members, or edit group details.
  • No Member Removal Privileges: Because there are no designated admins, no single user has the administrative power to unilaterally remove disruptive members.

Why Admin Features Are Limited

The disparity in advanced controls comes down to the underlying standard. Apple implements the GSM Association’s RCS Universal Profile 2.4. While Google Messages offers proprietary, cloud-hosted group features within Android-to-Android chats, those extended capabilities do not translate across platforms. Until the GSMA updates the Universal Profile standard to include standardized admin controls and both Apple and Google adopt those updates, cross-platform RCS group chats will remain decentralized with equal, basic permissions for all participants.
