Prioritize Critical Notifications in iOS 18
Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 introduces dedicated features that allow users to prioritize critical notifications and reduce daily digital clutter. By leveraging on-device language models, the system scans incoming alerts across multiple apps to identify time-sensitive information, elevating urgent updates to the top of the lock screen while filtering out non-essential distractions.
Priority Notifications
The primary way iOS 18 prioritizes critical alerts is through Priority Notifications. Instead of sorting alerts purely in chronological order or by app, Apple Intelligence analyzes the context and content of incoming messages, emails, and app alerts.
When the system detects high-urgency content—such as an alert about a same-day package delivery, a flight change, a child's school notification, or an urgent request from a contact—it surfaces that notification at the very top of the notification stack. This ensures users see actionable items immediately without having to scroll through routine pings and marketing messages.
"Reduce Interruptions" Focus Mode
Alongside Priority Notifications, Apple introduced a new Focus mode called "Reduce Interruptions." Unlike standard Focus modes that require manually allowlisting specific people or apps, Reduce Interruptions uses artificial intelligence to evaluate the context of every incoming notification dynamically.
When enabled, the mode blocks general notifications while allowing genuinely critical alerts to break through. For example, a casual message in a group chat will be silenced, but a message stating an emergency or a time-sensitive update from a family member will chime and display on the Lock Screen.
Notification Summaries
To further assist with prioritization, Apple Intelligence generates summarized overviews of stacked notifications directly on the Lock Screen. Instead of reading through dozens of individual text messages or email previews, users receive a concise summary of the conversation thread. This allows users to quickly assess whether a long thread requires immediate attention or can be addressed later.
Hardware Requirements
Priority Notifications and intelligent notification filtering rely on Apple Intelligence, which requires hardware capable of handling on-device generative models. These features are available on:
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 models
- iPads and Macs equipped with M1 chips or later
Users with compatible devices can enable these options directly through the Settings menu under the Notifications and Focus settings sections in iOS 18.1 and subsequent updates.
