New iPhone Calculator Features in iOS 18

Apple significantly updated the native Calculator app in iOS 18, delivering long-requested features to its basic and scientific interfaces. The update modernizes the calculation experience by introducing calculation history, built-in unit and currency conversion, full expression editing, access to scientific tools in portrait mode, and seamless integration with the new Math Notes feature.

Calculation History

The Calculator app now includes a persistent history tape. Tapping the menu icon reveals a chronological list of recent calculations. You can scroll through previous entries, copy past results, or pull an entire prior equation back into the current workspace.

Real-Time Unit and Currency Conversions

Users no longer need separate apps or web searches to convert measurements. Both the basic and scientific calculators include a toggleable "Convert" option. This tool supports live currency exchange rates as well as standard conversions for area, length, mass, temperature, time, volume, and speed.

Full Expression Visibility and Text Editing

Previously, the Calculator app only displayed the most recently entered number. In iOS 18, the display shows the complete mathematical expression as you type it. Users can tap within the equation to move a cursor, edit specific numbers or operators, and make corrections using a dedicated backspace button without clearing the entire calculation.

Scientific Calculator in Portrait Orientation

In earlier versions of iOS, accessing the scientific calculator required rotating the iPhone into landscape mode. In iOS 18, you can switch between the basic calculator, scientific calculator, and Math Notes directly from a mode switcher located at the bottom-left of the screen in portrait mode.

Math Notes Integration

A direct link to Math Notes allows users to type or handwrite mathematical expressions using standard notation. When you enter an equals sign, the app automatically solves the expression, supports assigning values to variables, and can plot equations onto interactive graphs.
