New iOS 18 Control Center Connectivity Toggles
Apple’s iOS 18 introduces a complete redesign of the Control Center, breaking connectivity controls out of their historically locked folder into independent, customizable buttons. This article outlines the new standalone connectivity toggles available in iOS 18, details how they enhance customization, and explains how users can add them individually to the Control Center grid and Lock Screen.
Standalone Connectivity Toggles in iOS 18
Prior to iOS 18, networking controls were grouped together inside an inflexible 2x2 widget. While this consolidated platter still exists, iOS 18 allows users to add each connectivity feature as an individual, standalone toggle anywhere on the Control Center grid:
- Wi-Fi: A direct toggle to enable or disable Wi-Fi without needing to open the full network platter.
- Bluetooth: A dedicated switch to turn Bluetooth connections on or off instantly.
- Cellular Data: A standalone button to toggle mobile data access.
- Personal Hotspot: Direct access to enable or disable hotspot sharing without tapping through nested menus.
- Airplane Mode: A single-button toggle to suspend all radio signals.
- AirDrop: A standalone toggle to change AirDrop receiving states (Receiving Off, Contacts Only, or Everyone for 10 Minutes).
- VPN: A dedicated control to connect or disconnect configured Virtual Private Networks.
- Satellite: A dedicated toggle and status indicator for emergency satellite features on supported iPhone models (iPhone 14 and newer).
Key Customization Improvements
The addition of these independent controls brings significant usability upgrades:
- Custom Grid Layouts: Each connectivity toggle can be placed on any page of the redesigned Control Center. Users can group their most frequently used toggles together rather than relying on a static system layout.
- Adjustable Sizing: Standalone connectivity controls can be resized. Users can keep them as standard 1x1 circular icons or expand them into larger widgets that display network names and connection statuses directly.
- Lock Screen Integration: Because these connectivity features are now recognized as independent controls by the system, they can also replace the default flashlight and camera buttons on the iOS 18 Lock Screen.
