Multi-User Options for Family iPad and iPhone in iOS 18
While Apple’s iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 introduce powerful customization and privacy updates, they still do not support native, consumer-facing multi-user account switching on a single shared device. True multi-user support remains exclusively locked behind institutional frameworks like Apple School Manager. However, families sharing an iPad or passing around an iPhone can utilize a combination of iOS 18 privacy features, Focus modes, Safari profiles, and device restrictions to simulate account separation and protect individual data.
The Reality of Multi-User Support in iOS 18
Apple designs both the iPhone and the consumer iPad as single-user personal devices tied to a single Apple Account. The "Shared iPad" feature, which allows multiple users to log in with their own Managed Apple Accounts, exists solely for enterprise and educational environments managed by Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems. Standard retail devices purchased for home use cannot access this capability.
To manage a shared device within a household, families must rely on alternative configurations available in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.
Locked and Hidden Apps (New in iOS 18)
The most direct solution for privacy on shared family devices in iOS 18 is the ability to lock and hide individual applications:
- Locked Apps: Any user can require Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode to open sensitive apps such as Messages, Photos, Mail, or banking tools. Even if a child or partner unlocks the device, they cannot open protected apps without secondary authentication.
- Hidden Apps: Users can move apps to a locked "Hidden" folder within the App Library. These apps will not appear on the Home Screen, will not send notifications, and will not show up in system searches, effectively keeping personal tools invisible to other family members.
Safari Profiles
For shared web browsing, Safari provides built-in multi-user separation through Profiles:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Profiles and create distinct profiles for each family member (e.g., "Parent," "Child," or "Work").
- Each profile maintains completely separate browsing histories, tab groups, cookies, extensions, and favorites.
- Users can quickly switch between profiles directly inside the Safari app by tapping the profile icon in the tab overview.
Focus Modes and Custom Home Screens
Focus modes allow users to change the entire layout and behavior of the iPad or iPhone depending on who is using it:
- Create dedicated Focus modes in Settings > Focus (e.g., "Kids," "Personal," or "Gaming").
- Assign specific Home Screen pages to each Focus mode so that only approved apps are visible.
- Use Focus Filters to filter out personal calendars, email accounts, or message threads when a child or secondary user is operating the device.
- Switch between users by simply swiping down Control Center and selecting the relevant Focus mode.
Guided Access for Single-App Sharing
When handing an iPad or iPhone to younger children for a specific task, Guided Access acts as a temporary lockdown tool:
- Enable it under Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access.
- Triple-click the top button (or Home button) within any app to lock the device into that specific application.
- You can disable hardware buttons, touch input on specific screen regions, and set session time limits, preventing the user from exiting into personal data or system settings.
Screen Time and Content Restrictions
To manage shared use safely, Screen Time provides granular control:
- Set a dedicated Screen Time Passcode distinct from the device unlock code.
- Restrict access to mature content, app installations, and in-app purchases.
- Configure downtime and app limits for specific entertainment or social media platforms to ensure shared screen time remains balanced.
