iPhone Battery Charge Limit Options in iOS 18
Apple expanded its battery health management features in iOS 18 by introducing granular charging limit options alongside intelligent charging recommendations. This guide covers the specific charge limits available, how they function to preserve long-term battery lifespan, how to configure them on supported devices, and why your iPhone might suggest specific settings based on your daily usage.
Available Charge Limit Configurations
In iOS 18, users on supported models can choose from five distinct maximum charge thresholds using a slider interface:
- 80% Limit: The most aggressive setting for preserving battery lifespan, ideal for users who remain near chargers throughout the day.
- 85% Limit: A slight capacity increase that still prevents the battery from sitting at high-voltage states.
- 90% Limit: A balanced middle ground offering strong daily endurance while significantly reducing battery degradation.
- 95% Limit: Maximizes daily usable battery while still avoiding the stress of prolonged 100% saturation.
- 100% (No Limit): Standard operation where the phone charges fully. When set to 100%, users can still enable Optimized Battery Charging, which delays charging past 80% until just before the user typically unplugs.
Intelligent Charge Limit Recommendations
iOS 18 includes a smart monitoring feature that tracks your daily charging habits. If your device detects that you consistently end the day with a large percentage of battery remaining, it will send a notification suggesting you lower your charge limit (such as to 80% or 90%).
Inside the Battery menu, a small label appears above the slider indicating which percentage the system recommends for your specific usage profile.
How to Configure Charge Limits in iOS 18
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Charging.
- Drag the slider to your preferred limit: 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, or 100%.
Supported Hardware
These granular charge limit controls are available on the iPhone 15 lineup and the iPhone 16 lineup. Older iPhone models running iOS 18 retain the legacy toggle between standard charging, "Optimized Battery Charging," and "Clean Energy Charging," but do not have access to the numeric percentage slider.
Calibration Behavior
If you select an 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95% limit, your iPhone will still occasionally charge to 100%. This is an intentional background behavior designed to calibrate the battery's state-of-charge estimator to maintain accurate battery percentage readings over time.
