iOS 18 Widget Features: Home and Lock Screen Updates

Apple’s iOS 18 brings substantial customization upgrades to widgets, fundamentally changing how users interact with their Home Screen and Lock Screen. This update introduces free-form widget placement, quick resizing capabilities, global color tinting, and the option to replace standard Lock Screen shortcuts with third-party controls.

Flexible Home Screen Placement

Widgets are no longer restricted to filling the Home Screen grid from top to bottom. Users can place widgets anywhere on the grid, allowing for blank spaces between rows and columns. This layout flexibility lets you frame wallpapers, organize spaces by category, or group related apps around a central widget.

Direct Resizing and App-to-Widget Conversion

Managing widget sizes no longer requires deleting and re-adding them from the widget gallery:

  • Resize Handles: Entering "jiggle mode" reveals a grab handle in the bottom-right corner of supported widgets, allowing users to drag and adjust dimensions between small, medium, and large layouts.
  • App Icon Conversion: Long-pressing an app icon opens a context menu that displays available widget sizes. Selecting a widget layout instantly converts the app icon into that widget, and vice versa.

Dark Mode and Color Tinting

Widgets now automatically integrate with the system-wide visual styling options available in iOS 18:

  • Dark Mode Styling: When Dark Mode is active, widgets adopt a darker background tone and deeper contrast to blend with darker app icons.
  • Color Tinting: Users can apply a custom color tint across their entire Home Screen. Widgets seamlessly adopt the chosen color palette alongside app icons, creating a unified, monochrome aesthetic.

Customizable Lock Screen Shortcuts

While widgets beneath the Lock Screen clock retain their glanceable functionality, the two quick-access slots at the bottom (traditionally locked to the Flashlight and Camera) are now fully customizable. Users can remove these buttons entirely or swap them for control widgets from built-in apps or supported third-party applications.

Expanded Controls API Integration

Under the hood, iOS 18 introduces the Controls API. This architecture allows developers to build lightweight, action-focused widgets that function across the Lock Screen, the Control Center, and the Action button. These controls execute tasks immediately—such as opening a specific third-party camera, toggling a smart home device, or starting a timer—without needing to open the full parent application.
