Apple’s iOS 18 introduces Vocal Shortcuts, an accessibility feature that allows users to assign entirely custom voice triggers to system actions, including complex routines built in the Shortcuts app. By pairing this feature with pre-configured multi-step automations, users can run advanced, chained actions using any spoken phrase of their choice without relying on standard "Siri" wake words.

How Vocal Shortcuts Work with Multi-Step Automations

Vocal Shortcuts functions by listening for user-defined sound profiles directly on the device. Instead of replacing the Shortcuts app, it acts as an alternative, trigger mechanism. Because any shortcut can be assigned as a target action, any routine—regardless of how many steps, conditional branches, or third-party app actions it contains—can be executed via a custom phrase.

Key Benefits of Custom Vocal Triggers

  • No Wake Words Required: You do not need to say "Hey Siri" or "Siri." Any unique word, sound, or phrase you define will launch the action immediately.
  • On-Device Processing: The acoustic matching happens entirely locally on the device's Neural Engine, preserving privacy and maintaining fast execution.
  • Unrestricted Logic: The multi-step routine retains all features supported by the Shortcuts app, including API calls, smart home scene adjustments, sequential messaging, and device setting toggles.

Setting Up a Multi-Step Vocal Shortcut

  1. Build the Routine: Open the Shortcuts app and create your automation. Add all desired steps sequentially (e.g., set brightness, send a message, and open an app), then name the shortcut.
  2. Access Vocal Shortcuts: Open Settings, navigate to Accessibility, and select Vocal Shortcuts.
  3. Configure the Action: Tap Set Up Vocal Shortcut, search for your newly created multi-step shortcut, and select it.
  4. Train the Trigger Phrase: Type the exact custom phrase you wish to speak, then pronounce it clearly three times so the device can generate a local voiceprint.

Once calibrated, saying your designated trigger phrase in normal proximity to your iPhone will instantly run the multi-step routine from start to finish.
