iOS 18 Video Recording Controls and Pause Feature

Apple's iOS 18 introduces significant upgrades to the native Camera app, headlined by the long-awaited ability to pause and resume video recording within a single file. Alongside this pause capability, the update streamlines the on-screen capture interface, allows uninterrupted background audio playback, and integrates advanced audio mixing tools to enhance the overall mobile video production experience.

Dedicated Video Pause Button

The most notable addition to the Camera app in iOS 18 is mid-capture pausing. Previously, stopping a video finalized the file, requiring users to shoot multiple clips and splice them together later in an editing app.

With iOS 18, a dedicated pause button appears on the left side of the viewfinder immediately after starting a video recording. Tapping this button temporarily halts recording while keeping the session active. Tapping it again seamlessly resumes recording into the same video file. The standard stop button remains on the right to finalize and save the completed clip to the Photos library.

Continuous Background Audio Playback

Prior to iOS 18, opening the Camera app and starting a video automatically paused any music or podcast playing on the device. iOS 18 introduces a toggle that permits continuous audio playback through Bluetooth connections or the device's speakers while recording. Found under Settings > Camera > Record Sound, enabling "Allow Audio Playback" prevents your media from cutting off, making it easier to capture videos with real-time background soundtracks without using third-party software.

Redesigned Controls and Status Indicators

The video capture user interface features subtle refinements to keep controls intuitive:

  • Distinct State Indicators: When a recording is paused, the elapsed time counter pauses, and the pause icon shifts to an active resume state, preventing accidental misfires.
  • Streamlined Mode Switching: The transition between standard Video, Cinematic, and Action modes features quicker touch targets, reducing clutter across the bottom toolbar.
  • Camera Control Integration: For devices equipped with the dedicated Camera Control button, iOS 18 provides capacitive slide-and-press gestures to adjust zoom levels, exposure, and depth of field directly without obscuring the screen.

Advanced Audio Mix Tools

To complement visual controls, iOS 18 introduces post-capture and real-time audio controls under the Audio Mix feature. Users can isolate speech using three distinct profiles:

  • In-Frame: Prioritizes voices of individuals visible on-screen while suppressing off-camera ambient sound.
  • Studio: Simulates a professional recording environment by reducing reverberation and background noise to make voices sound as though they were captured with an external microphone.
  • Cinematic: Formats vocal tracks to sit forward in the audio mix while preserving surrounding environmental noise for a movie-style soundstage.

Additionally, iOS 18 incorporates automated wind noise reduction, automatically analyzing and cleaning up compromised audio tracks during recording.
