iOS 18 Vehicle Motion Cues: How Animated Dots Work
Apple introduced Vehicle Motion Cues in iOS 18 to help reduce motion sickness for passengers using an iPhone or iPad in a moving vehicle. The feature uses the device's built-in sensors to display subtle, animated dots along the edges of the display that respond in real time to the vehicle's movement. By matching visual motion to the physical motion felt by the body, this tool bridges sensory discrepancies without interfering with the user's primary content.
The Cause of Motion Sickness
Motion sickness typically arises from a sensory conflict between the eyes and the inner ear (the vestibular system). When a passenger looks at a stationary screen inside a moving car, the inner ear detects acceleration, braking, and turns, while the eyes perceive a static, unchanging image. This neurological conflict signals a mismatch to the brain, commonly triggering symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and headaches.
How Vehicle Motion Cues Function
Vehicle Motion Cues operates by visually representing physical movement directly on the screen:
- Hardware Sensors: The feature relies on the iPhone's built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes. These sensors detect changes in speed, directional turns, and braking forces in real time.
- Peripheral Dots: Instead of covering the display, animated dots appear strictly along the left, right, top, and bottom borders. This design ensures that text, videos, and interface elements remain readable and unobscured.
- Directional Adaptation: As the vehicle moves, the
dots move in the opposing direction to represent inertia:
- When the vehicle turns left, the dots drift to the right.
- When the vehicle turns right, the dots drift to the left.
- When the vehicle accelerates, the dots shift toward the bottom of the screen.
- When the vehicle brakes, the dots move toward the top of the screen.
Resolving the Sensory Conflict
Because human peripheral vision is highly sensitive to motion, the brain processes the moving dots without requiring the user to look away from their content. The peripheral motion provided by the dots matches the physical forces detected by the inner ear. Consequently, the brain registers that the visual field aligns with bodily sensations, effectively eliminating or significantly lowering the sensory conflict that causes kinetosis (motion sickness).
How to Enable the Feature
Vehicle Motion Cues can be configured in two ways:
- Settings: Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Vehicle Motion Cues.
- Control Center: Add the Vehicle Motion Cues control module for fast toggling.
Users can set the feature to On, Off, or Automatic. When set to Automatic, the device uses sensor data to recognize when it is inside a moving vehicle and engages the dots automatically, dismissing them once the vehicle stops.
