Apple introduced hands-free unlock functionality in the iOS 18 Home app, allowing compatible smart locks to open automatically as a user approaches. Powered by Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, this feature activates when an authenticated iPhone or Apple Watch comes within a precise proximity of roughly 1.5 meters (approximately 4 to 6 feet) from the door lock. Activation Distance and Proximity Range

The iOS 18 hands-free unlocking feature triggers when an authorized device enters a range of approximately 1.5 meters (4 to 6 feet) of the smart lock. Unlike traditional Bluetooth geofencing, which often has a wide and unpredictable radius of 10 to 30 feet, UWB measures the time of flight between radio signals with centimeter-level precision. This tight range ensures that the door unlocks only when you are directly in front of it and intending to enter.

Directional Awareness and Intent

A key security aspect of the 1.5-meter activation threshold is directional sensing. UWB hardware can detect whether a user is approaching the door from the outside or simply walking past it on the inside of the home.

The lock will only automatically disengage if:

  • The device is approaching from the designated exterior side.
  • The device is moving toward the door rather than remaining stationary nearby.
  • The device crosses into the immediate 1.5-meter perimeter.

Difference Between NFC Home Key and UWB Hands-Free

Prior to iOS 18, Apple Home Key relied on Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC requires users to physically tap or hold their device within a few centimeters (1 to 2 inches) of the lock reader.

The UWB implementation in iOS 18 removes the need for physical contact. As long as your compatible iPhone or Apple Watch is on your person—such as in a pocket or bag—the lock senses your approach and disengages by the time you reach the handle.

To utilize hands-free automatic unlocking at this range, your setup must meet specific requirements:

  • Operating System: iOS 18 or watchOS 11 or later.
  • Apple Devices: An iPhone or Apple Watch equipped with Apple’s Ultra-Wideband chip (iPhone 11 or newer, excluding iPhone SE models; Apple Watch Series 6 or newer, excluding SE models).
  • Smart Lock Hardware: A smart lock built with dedicated UWB radios compatible with Apple Home and the Aliro smart access standard.
