iOS 18 Tinted App Icons in Light Mode Explained
Apple’s iOS 18 brings extensive Home Screen customization to the iPhone, allowing users to apply uniform color palettes across all application icons through the Tinted feature. This article explains the visual behavior of tinted icons, detailing how they look when the system operates in Light Mode versus what happens when you switch icon settings back to the standard Light appearance.
The Appearance of Tinted Icons During System Light Mode
When the Tinted styling is selected on an iOS 18 Home Screen, the icons do not adopt a traditional light aesthetic, even if the system-wide appearance is set to Light Mode.
Instead, tinted icons maintain a persistent dark-base structure. Apple renders tinted icons using a two-tone design:
- The Background: The base of every icon remains dark gray or near-black, subtly infused with the selected tint color.
- The Foreground: App glyphs, logos, and primary graphic elements are illuminated by the chosen custom color.
Because the Tinted customization overrides the standard Light and Dark interface modes, switching your iPhone’s overall system theme from Dark Mode to Light Mode does not change the background of tinted icons to white or bright colors. They stay uniform, monochromatic, and dark-backed to preserve contrast and color accuracy.
Switching Icon Settings from Tinted to Light Mode
If you open the Home Screen customization menu (by long-pressing the wallpaper, tapping Edit, and selecting Customize) and manually switch the icon setting from Tinted to Light, the visual appearance changes completely:
- Removal of the Color Overlay: The single-color tint is removed from all third-party and native applications.
- Restoration of Original Colors: Icons return to their original, full-color brand palettes and multi-colored designs.
- Brightened Icon Bases: Any app icon designed with a white or light background returns to its standard bright appearance, fully reflecting the classic iOS Light Mode aesthetic.
