iOS 18 Scheduled Messages Visual Indicator

Apple’s iOS 18 introduces the "Send Later" feature to the Messages app, allowing users to schedule texts for future delivery. This article details the specific visual indicator used to highlight pending scheduled messages within iMessage threads, explains how to distinguish them from standard messages, and outlines the interface elements available for managing queued texts before they are sent.

The Dashed Border Bubble

The primary visual indicator highlighting a pending scheduled message in iOS 18 is a dashed border around the message bubble.

Unlike standard sent messages, which feature a solid blue or green background, pending scheduled messages appear with a distinct outline made of dashed or dotted lines. This visually separates queued messages from the active conversation history, making it immediately clear that the text has not yet been delivered to the recipient.

Placement and Timing Details

In addition to the dashed border, pending scheduled messages include contextual cues within the conversation thread:

  • Bottom Placement: The pending message sits at the very bottom of the conversation thread, directly above the text composition bar, keeping it easily visible to the sender.
  • Scheduled Timestamp: Above the dashed message bubble, a small label displays the targeted delivery details (for example, "Tomorrow at 9:00 AM").
  • Edit Controls: A small Edit option appears alongside the dashed bubble. Tapping this option opens a pop-up menu allowing you to:
    • Send Message Now: Immediately bypass the schedule and deliver the text.
    • Edit Time: Adjust the scheduled date or delivery hour.
    • Delete Message: Remove the pending message completely.

Transition to Sent Status

Once the scheduled delivery time is reached, the visual appearance updates automatically. The dashed outline disappears, the bubble fills with the standard solid color (blue for iMessage or green for SMS), and standard delivery receipts (such as "Delivered" or "Read") apply.
