iOS 18 Safari Reader Mode Features and Upgrades

Apple’s iOS 18 brings significant improvements to Safari's Reader Mode, transforming it into a smarter, more productive tool for consuming long-form web content. The upgraded experience leverages Apple Intelligence to offer automatic article summaries, introduces an interactive table of contents for seamless navigation, and refines the reading interface with streamlined controls and visual customization options.

AI-Generated Article Summaries

The standout addition to Reader Mode in iOS 18 is the integration of Apple Intelligence-driven summaries. When you activate Reader Mode on a supported webpage, Safari can generate a concise, high-level summary at the very top of the article. This allows users to grasp the core takeaways and key points instantly before committing to reading the full piece.

Dynamic Table of Contents

For longer articles, research papers, and guides, Reader Mode now automatically generates a clickable table of contents. Positioned alongside the summary, this feature parses the webpage's subheadings, allowing you to jump directly to specific sections without manually scrolling through entire pages.

Redesigned Page Controls

The Reader controls have been relocated and streamlined into a modernized Page Menu within the unified Smart Search field. Tapping the redesigned menu icon provides immediate access to Reader Mode, summary options, and display preferences in one organized sheet, reducing screen clutter and simplifying access.

Visual and Typographic Customization

Safari maintains its distraction-free design while offering flexible personalization tools. Users can tailor their reading environment by choosing from multiple background themes (including White, Sepia, Gray, and Black), adjusting text sizing on the fly, and selecting from a curated list of system fonts like San Francisco, New York, Georgia, and Palatino to minimize eye strain.

Integrated "Listen to Page" Access

The upgraded interface makes audio playback more accessible. With a single tap inside the Reader controls, users can trigger Siri-powered text-to-speech to read the article aloud, complete with media playback controls on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island for hands-free listening.
