iOS 18 RCS Delivery Receipts with Android Users
With the integration of Rich Communication Services (RCS) in iOS 18, group chats involving both iPhone and Android users now support modern messaging standards, including delivery receipts. This article outlines how delivery indicators are formatted, how per-recipient delivery statuses are viewed, and the technical requirements necessary for these receipts to appear in mixed group conversations.
The Role of RCS in iOS 18 Group Chats
Prior to iOS 18, any group conversation containing at least one Android user defaulted to Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), which lacks delivery tracking entirely. In iOS 18, as long as the carrier supports it and the feature is enabled in settings, mixed groups default to RCS.
These conversations still appear in green bubbles, but the text entry field displays "RCS Message" instead of "Text Message." This protocol change allows the Messages app to register sent, delivered, and read states across operating systems.
Inline Delivery Status Formatting
In an active RCS group chat, delivery receipts follow a specific format beneath your sent message bubbles:
- Summary Status: Below the most recent message you send, a small text indicator appears. Once the message successfully reaches the carrier networks and devices of all group participants, the label updates to "Delivered."
- In-Progress Delivery: If the message has only reached a portion of the group—or is still processing through carrier RCS hubs—the space beneath the message remains blank until the final participant's device acknowledges receipt.
- Read Receipts: If all participants have read receipts enabled, the indicator transitions from "Delivered" to "Read."
Detailed Message Info Breakdown
Because group chats contain multiple recipients, a single inline status only reflects the collective state of the thread. To see the delivery status for individual Android and iOS users, iOS 18 provides a detailed breakdown:
- Touch and hold the specific message bubble you sent.
- Tap Info from the context menu (or swipe left on the message bubble).
- The screen displays two distinct sections: Delivered to and Read by.
Under the Delivered to list, each contact's name is displayed alongside a timestamp indicating exactly when the RCS payload arrived on their device. Android users appear identically to iPhone users in this list, showing their contact name and the precise delivery time.
Fallback Behavior and Limitations
Delivery receipts only appear if the entire group operates over RCS:
- Universal RCS Requirement: Every member of the group must have an RCS-capable device and carrier support enabled. If a single Android or iPhone user in the group does not have RCS active, the thread falls back to legacy MMS.
- MMS Indicator Absence: If the thread falls back to MMS, all delivery receipts are omitted entirely, leaving the space below sent messages blank regardless of whether individual members received the message.
