iOS 18 Low Power Mode Changes Explained
Apple's iOS 18 introduces key adjustments to Low Power Mode designed to optimize battery endurance across newer hardware architectures and system-level capabilities. This update refines how the operating system manages on-device processing, display refresh rates, and background tasks, ensuring devices conserve energy more effectively during low-battery states.
Apple Intelligence and Neural Processing Limits
The most notable behavior adjustment to Low Power Mode in iOS 18 centers on Apple Intelligence and local machine learning tasks. When Low Power Mode is activated on supported devices, the system suspends heavy on-device Neural Engine processing. Complex generative AI tasks, such as local text summarization, image generation, and context-heavy Siri queries, are either deferred or redirected to cloud infrastructure where applicable to prevent rapid battery depletion.
Performance Throttling and Thermal Management
Under iOS 18, Low Power Mode applies a more aggressive governor to the CPU and GPU. System performance is throttled by limiting high-performance cores and shifting standard tasks to efficiency cores. This reduces peak power draw and minimizes thermal output, extending the remaining battery percentage during everyday tasks like web browsing and messaging.
Display and Visual Adjustments
Display management under Low Power Mode has also been tightened in iOS 18:
- ProMotion Display Capping: On devices featuring ProMotion technology, the maximum refresh rate is locked at 60Hz, preventing the display from ramping up to 120Hz.
- HDR Video Restrictions: High Dynamic Range (HDR) video playback is automatically downgraded to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) brightness levels to conserve screen power.
- Auto-Lock Interval: The display auto-lock duration is immediately forced to 30 seconds to minimize idle display consumption.
Network and Background Activity Constraints
iOS 18 adjusts background connectivity behavior to further curb power consumption:
- 5G Management: The operating system restricts 5G connectivity, dropping down to standard LTE unless high-bandwidth tasks such as active video streaming are initiated by the user.
- Background App Refresh and Downloads: Automatic iCloud photo syncing, automatic app updates, and Background App Refresh are completely paused until the device is plugged into power or Low Power Mode is switched off.
- Email Fetching: Mail fetching shifts entirely to a manual pull, disabling push notifications for incoming messages to keep the modem in low-power idle states.
