iOS 18 Journal: State of Mind and Time Tracking

With the release of iOS 18, Apple expanded the native Journal app by integrating essential mental wellness tools directly into the writing experience. The updated app supports both logging your State of Mind and tracking the time spent journaling as Mindful Minutes in the Apple Health app. This update simplifies emotional tracking by letting you capture your mood and your mindfulness data in one seamless workflow.

State of Mind Tracking in iOS 18

In iOS 18, you no longer need to open the Health app separately to record your mood. The Journal app now includes a built-in prompt to log your State of Mind:

  • In-App Logging: When composing an entry or reviewing your day, you can log momentary emotions or your overall daily mood directly from the Journal interface.
  • Health App Sync: Any State of Mind logged within the Journal app automatically syncs with the State of Mind database in Apple Health.
  • Contextual Correlation: The Health app links your journal entries with mood logs, helping you identify trends, triggers, and activities that influence your emotional well-being over time.

Logging Time Spent as Mindful Minutes

iOS 18 allows the time you spend actively writing in the Journal app to count toward your daily mindfulness goals:

  • Mindful Session Tracking: The app records the duration of your writing sessions and can log this duration as Mindful Minutes in the Health app.
  • Enabling the Feature: To ensure your journaling time is recorded, open Settings, select Journal, and verify that permissions are granted to share data with the Health app under Mindful Minutes.
  • Mindfulness Integration: These logged sessions contribute directly to your overall mindfulness metrics alongside sessions from apps like Fitness or third-party meditation tools.

Journal Insights and Statistics

Alongside State of Mind and time tracking, iOS 18 introduces a dedicated Insights view in the Journal app:

  • Streaks and Consistency: Monitor your current and longest journaling streaks to maintain a consistent habit.
  • Writing Metrics: View total entries, word counts, and calendar heatmaps of your writing activity.
  • Places and Media Summaries: Track where you wrote and what types of media (photos, audio, locations) you included most frequently.
