iOS 18 Journal App Streaks and Writing Metrics

In iOS 18, Apple expanded the native Journal app by introducing a dedicated Insights dashboard designed to track user engagement over time. This update allows users to monitor their writing consistency through dynamic streak counters and review detailed personal statistics, such as total word counts, entry frequency, and journaling habits.

The Insights Dashboard

To access your metrics, tap the Insights icon (a small bar graph or calendar icon) located in the Journal app's main interface. This dedicated view centralizes all analytical data related to your journaling activity, eliminating the need to manually review individual entries to see your progress.

How Streaks Are Tracked

The Journal app calculates streaks based on consecutive calendar days in which at least one entry is recorded.

  • Current and Best Streaks: The app displays your active streak alongside your all-time longest streak. A streak advances each day an entry is saved before midnight in your local time zone.
  • Streak Calendar: A monthly calendar visualizes your consistency. Days with completed entries are marked, helping you quickly identify gaps in your routine.
  • Reminders and Grace Periods: To help maintain active streaks, iOS 18 allows you to configure scheduled notifications. If you have not written by a specific time of day, the app can deliver a reminder to log an entry before the daily cutoff resets your streak count.

Writing Metrics and Statistics

Beyond streak counting, iOS 18 introduces comprehensive writing metrics that analyze your content over time:

  • Word Count: The app records the total number of words written across your entire journal, as well as the average word count per entry. An active word counter is also available within the entry editing interface.
  • Total Entries: A running tally displays how many individual entries you have created since you began using the app.
  • Places and Media Logged: Metrics extend to non-text additions, tracking how frequently you attach photos, voice recordings, locations, or state-of-mind reflections.

Privacy and Data Processing

All metrics and streak calculations are processed entirely on-device. Apple protects Journal data using end-to-end encryption when synced via iCloud, ensuring that personal statistics, writing habits, and entry contents remain inaccessible to anyone other than the device owner.
