iOS 18 Home App Energy Usage Monitoring Tools

Apple’s iOS 18 update expands the Home app by integrating dedicated energy monitoring tools designed to help households track, understand, and reduce their electricity consumption. By enabling direct integration with utility providers and enhancing clean-energy tracking features, the update gives users clear visibility into their real-time electricity usage, peak-hour pricing, and overall energy grid impact directly from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Utility Provider Integration

The centerpiece of the energy update in iOS 18 is the ability to connect eligible utility accounts directly to the Home app. Rather than relying on separate smart plugs or third-party utility apps, users can view their official household electricity consumption directly in the Home interface. During the initial rollout, this integration launched for eligible Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers in California, with support for additional utility providers planned over time.

Detailed Electricity Usage Tracking

Once connected to a supported utility, the Home app displays detailed breakdowns of household electricity use. Users can view:

  • Historical Consumption: View past electricity usage measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) across days, weeks, months, or billing periods.
  • Cost Estimates: See the estimated cost of electricity based on actual meter readings and billing data provided by the utility company.
  • Usage Trends: Compare consumption patterns over time to identify periods of unusually high energy draw.

Time-of-Use Rate Insights

For users enrolled in dynamic or Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plans, the Home app provides real-time information on electricity pricing tiers. It clearly indicates when electricity is at its highest cost (peak hours) and when rates drop (off-peak hours). This information helps users schedule energy-intensive tasks—such as charging electric vehicles or running dishwashers and laundry appliances—during cheaper hours of the day.

Enhanced Grid Forecast

iOS 18 integrates electricity usage with Apple's Grid Forecast feature. Grid Forecast shows users when the local electrical grid is running on cleaner, lower-emission energy sources, such as solar and wind. When paired with utility rate data, users gain a complete picture of both the financial and environmental impact of their energy consumption, allowing them to time their major appliance usage for when the grid is both cleanest and most cost-effective.
