iOS 18 Freeform PDF Export Settings

Apple’s Freeform app in iOS 18 allows users to export digital whiteboards directly into PDF documents, but it does not offer built-in quality presets or resolution sliders. Instead of providing selectable quality tiers such as low, medium, or high, iOS 18 automatically exports boards using a fixed, high-fidelity format that prioritizes clarity across all content types.

Available Quality Options in iOS 18

When exporting a Freeform board to PDF on iOS 18, there are no configurable quality settings. The export engine operates automatically without user-adjustable parameters for compression, DPI, or file size.

The resulting PDF uses a hybrid rendering approach:

  • Vector Elements (Lossless Quality): Native shapes, digital ink from the Apple Pencil, lines, connectors, and typed text are exported as scalable vector graphics. These elements retain maximum sharpness regardless of zoom level or display size.
  • Raster Images and Media (Source Resolution): Embedded photos, scans, and imported bitmap images are saved at their existing resolutions, optimized to balance visual clarity with overall file size. They are not downsampled to lower-quality presets during the export process.

How to Export a Freeform Board as a PDF

To save a Freeform whiteboard as a PDF on an iPhone running iOS 18:

  1. Open the Freeform app and select the board you wish to export.
  2. Tap the downward arrow next to the board name at the top of the screen (or the Share icon).
  3. Select Export as PDF.
  4. Choose a destination from the iOS share sheet, such as Save to Files, AirDrop, or Mail.

Managing Exported PDF File Sizes

Because Freeform does not include native compression toggles, boards with numerous high-resolution images or extensive handwriting can produce large PDF files. To adjust the quality or reduce the file size after export, you can:

  • Use the Files App: Locate the exported PDF in the Files app, long-press the file, tap Quick Actions, and select Optimize File Size.
  • Use Apple Shortcuts: Create or run an iOS Shortcut utilizing the "Make PDF" or image compression actions to downsample the document.
  • Third-Party Tools: Process the exported document through dedicated PDF compression software to target specific DPI or file size constraints.
