iOS 18 Flashlight Beam Width Visual Feedback

In iOS 18, Apple overhauled the iPhone flashlight interface for supported models, embedding an interactive controller directly into the Dynamic Island. When modifying the beam angle, the Dynamic Island delivers real-time graphic feedback by rendering an animated, expanding cone of light that visually matches the physical spread and intensity of the Adaptive True Tone flash.

The Animated Light Cone

When you turn on the flashlight on a compatible iPhone, the Dynamic Island expands into a dedicated control surface. Adjusting the beam's angle (width) is done by dragging horizontally across the screen, which triggers the following visual responses:

  • Variable Cone Width: A downward-facing, illuminated beam of light dynamically widens or narrows. Sliding your finger left narrows the cone into a concentrated spotlight, while sliding right flares the cone out into a broad floodlight.
  • Curved Boundary Arcs: Subtle curved guide lines mark the outer edges of the beam, providing a clear visual boundary for the minimum and maximum spread angles.
  • Synchronized Intensity Display: If you adjust the vertical axis (brightness) simultaneously, the luminosity and opacity of the rendered light cone increase or decrease in real time alongside the width adjustments.
  • Interactive Power Toggle: A minimal power icon anchors the interface, remaining illuminated while active and collapsing smoothly back into the pill-shaped Dynamic Island once tapped off or dismissed.

Hardware Compatibility

This specific visual feedback and beam-width adjustment feature requires an iPhone equipped with both a Dynamic Island and the Adaptive True Tone flash system. It is available on the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 lineup. Standard models without the adaptive LED array retain traditional brightness-only controls.
