iOS 18 Flashlight Beam Width Visual Controls

With iOS 18, Apple introduced a redesigned flashlight interface integrated directly into the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones, allowing users to modify both brightness intensity and beam width. When adjusting the beam width on compatible hardware, iOS 18 displays an interactive, real-time graphical representation of the light beam on the screen. Below is a breakdown of the visual adjustments and on-screen interface elements that appear during this process.

The Dynamic Island Expansion

Activating the flashlight expands the Dynamic Island into a larger interactive card. Inside this expanded pill interface, a minimalist flashlight icon appears alongside a simulated graphic of light projecting from the source.

The Dynamic Light Cone

The primary visual element representing beam width is a simulated light cone projecting outward from the flashlight icon on the display:

  • Narrow Beam: Swiping horizontally inward or to the left causes the rendered cone of light to contract. Visually, the light narrows into a sharp, focused beam resembling a spotlight, indicating a concentrated throw.
  • Wide Beam: Swiping horizontally outward or to the right causes the rendered cone to fan out. The edges of the light graphic spread laterally across the Dynamic Island card, representing a floodlight pattern designed to illuminate a broader field of view.

Axis Indicators and Gesture Feedback

The interface uses a dual-axis control system where visual cues correspond to touch gestures:

  • Horizontal Axis (Width): Horizontal dragging directly morphs the curvature and angle of the light beam graphic. The edges of the illuminated arc dynamically expand or contract in fluid motion beneath the user's finger.
  • Vertical Axis (Intensity): While horizontal movement modifies width, vertical movement modifies brightness. The graphic visually represents brightness through the intensity and length of the glowing graphic, allowing both adjustments to be seen simultaneously on a unified 2D grid.

Collapsed Dynamic Island Indicator

Once the adjustment is made and the user taps outside the expanded card, the interface collapses back into the standard Dynamic Island. When collapsed, the island displays a compact flashlight glyph accompanied by a miniaturized light beam symbol that reflects whether the light is currently active, preserving the configured beam width setting in the background.
