iOS 18 Call Recording Without Cloud Storage
Apple's iOS 18 introduces a built-in call recording and transcription feature that integrates directly into the Phone and Notes applications. While these recordings default to syncing across devices through iCloud, users can keep audio files strictly on their local device storage without consuming cloud space by adjusting specific system settings and understanding how the operating system handles the media files.
On-Device Audio Processing and Storage
When you initiate a call recording in iOS 18, the Phone app captures the audio stream directly from the device's hardware. Apple Intelligence processes the audio to generate a real-time transcript, while the raw audio file is compressed into a compact format to minimize storage consumption. By default, these files and transcripts are saved inside a dedicated "Call Recordings" folder within the Notes app.
Disabling iCloud Sync to Retain Local-Only Copies
To prevent these audio files from consuming your iCloud storage quota, you must manage how the Notes app syncs data:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your Apple Account name at the top.
- Select iCloud, then tap Saved to iCloud (or Notes).
- Toggle the switch off for Notes.
Disabling iCloud synchronization for Notes forces the app to store all data—including call recordings, attachments, and transcripts—exclusively in the internal storage of your iPhone.
Utilizing the "On My iPhone" Notes Account
If you prefer to keep standard notes synced across your Apple devices while keeping call recordings strictly offline:
- Navigate to Settings > Notes.
- Toggle on the "On My iPhone" Account option.
- After recording a call, open the Notes app, locate the recorded call note, and move it from your iCloud folder to a folder under the On My iPhone section.
Moving the note ensures that the associated audio file is removed from iCloud servers and retained solely on your physical device memory.
Exporting and Managing Local Audio Files
To remove the audio from the Notes ecosystem entirely without uploading it to any cloud service, you can export the recording to the local file system:
- Open the call recording inside the Notes app.
- Tap the audio player attachment and select the Share button.
- Choose Save to Files.
- Select a directory under the On My iPhone location, rather than iCloud Drive.
- Delete the original note from the Notes app and empty the Recently Deleted folder.
Following this process ensures that call audio remains completely accessible on your device's native drive while using zero megabytes of cloud storage.
