iOS 18 AirPlay Features and Improvements
Apple's iOS 18 introduces key enhancements to AirPlay, refining how users stream audio and video across their connected devices. This update expands Spatial Audio support to compatible hardware, broadens hotel room TV integration, improves intelligent device suggestions, and offers better guest controls through the Home app. Below are the primary updates to AirPlay streaming available in iOS 18.
Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos Support
iOS 18 brings Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos to AirPlay streaming. Users can now stream immersive, multi-dimensional audio directly from an iPhone to HomePod and supported third-party AirPlay-enabled speakers. Previously, AirPlay downsampled audio to standard stereo when pushed from an iOS device. With this update, supported media maintains its full spatial soundstage, including height channels and directional effects.
Expanded Hotel TV AirPlay Integration
Building on the initial rollout in earlier iOS versions, iOS 18 significantly expands AirPlay support in hotels. Guests can connect their iPhone to compatible hotel room televisions simply by scanning a unique QR code on the screen. This establishes a secure, private connection over the local Wi-Fi network without requiring guests to enter credentials manually or log into hotel systems. Apple has partnered with additional global hotel chains and television manufacturers (such as LG) to deploy this capability to more locations worldwide.
Smarter Device Predictions and Suggestions
AirPlay in iOS 18 features enhanced on-device intelligence for routing audio. The system learns your listening habits, location, and preferred playback hardware over time. For example, if you frequently stream podcasts to a kitchen HomePod in the morning or send video to an Apple TV in the evening, iOS 18 proactively places that target device at the top of your AirPlay options or suggests the connection via a lock-screen prompt.
Refined Control Center Integration
The redesigned Control Center in iOS 18 offers more direct access to AirPlay controls. Users can add dedicated AirPlay widgets, resize playback tiles, and switch audio outputs with fewer taps. The Now Playing interface provides clearer visuals for active AirPlay sessions and allows for faster volume and device switching.
Enhanced Guest Access in the Home App
iOS 18 gives HomeKit administrators finer control over AirPlay access. Through the Home app, you can grant temporary or guest access to HomePod speakers and Apple TVs without giving visitors complete access to the rest of your smart home network. Guests can easily select and stream to designated speakers while maintaining your home network's privacy and security.
