How to Turn RCS Messaging On or Off in iOS 18
Apple introduced Rich Communication Services (RCS) support in iOS 18, allowing iPhone users to experience enhanced texting features when communicating with Android devices. While cellular data and carrier support are mandatory for RCS to function, users cannot toggle RCS messaging directly within the Cellular settings menu. Instead, Apple places the master switch inside the Messages configuration menu. This guide explains where to locate the toggle, how to turn RCS on or off, and the role your cellular carrier plays.
Where the RCS Toggle Is Located
In iOS 18, the switch to enable or disable RCS messaging is located in the Messages settings rather than the Cellular settings. Although RCS relies on an active cellular data connection, Apple groups all texting protocol controls—including iMessage, SMS/MMS, and RCS—together under the messaging preferences.
To find and toggle the RCS setting:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 18.
- Scroll down and tap Apps, then select Messages (or tap Messages directly from the main Settings list).
- Scroll to the Text Messaging section.
- Tap RCS Messaging.
- Toggle the RCS Messaging switch to the green "On" position to enable it, or tap it again to turn it off.
When disabled, communications with Android devices will automatically revert to standard SMS and MMS messaging.
The Role of Cellular Settings
While you cannot turn RCS on or off directly inside Settings > Cellular, cellular settings still dictate whether RCS works:
- Carrier Capability: RCS availability is determined by your mobile carrier. If your network does not yet support RCS on iOS, the "RCS Messaging" option will not appear in your Messages settings at all.
- IMS Status Verification: You can verify whether your carrier has provisioned RCS on your device by going to Settings > General > About, scrolling down to your SIM or eSIM section, and tapping Carrier. If supported, the "IMS Status" field will list "Voice, SMS & RCS."
- Cellular Data Requirement: Because RCS transmits high-resolution media, read receipts, and typing indicators over an internet connection, turning off cellular data under Settings > Cellular will disable RCS functionality whenever your device is not connected to Wi-Fi.
