How to Switch Calculator Modes in iOS 18
Apple's iOS 18 introduces a major redesign to the native Calculator app, replacing the traditional rotation-based interface with a dedicated mode switcher. Users can now seamlessly switch between the Basic calculator, Scientific calculator, and the new Math Notes feature directly from portrait orientation using a unified menu button.
How to Change Calculator Modes
To switch between the available calculator modes on iOS 18:
- Open the Calculator app on your iPhone.
- Locate the calculator icon button in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Tap the icon to open the mode selection menu.
- Select your preferred mode: Basic, Scientific, or Math Notes.
Understanding the Three Modes
- Basic: The standard layout designed for everyday arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and percentages.
- Scientific: Provides advanced functions such as trigonometry, logarithms, powers, and roots. Unlike earlier iOS versions where accessing scientific tools required rotating the iPhone into landscape orientation, iOS 18 allows full access to scientific functions in portrait mode.
- Math Notes: Opens an interactive canvas where you can write or type mathematical expressions, define variables, solve complex equations automatically, and generate dynamic graphs. Math Notes syncs directly with the Apple Notes app.
The mode switcher menu also contains a Convert toggle, which enables real-time unit and currency conversions within the standard calculator interfaces.
