How to Schedule iMessages in iOS 18

Apple’s iOS 18 introduces a native "Send Later" feature to the Messages app, allowing users to compose a text and schedule it to be delivered automatically at a future date and time. This functionality is integrated directly into the iMessage interface, making it simple to set reminders, send birthday greetings at midnight, or communicate across different time zones without needing third-party automation tools.

How the Feature Works

The Send Later feature allows scheduling for any time between a few minutes and up to 14 days in advance. Because the scheduled messages are managed through Apple’s servers rather than locally on the device, the message will still be delivered at the appointed time even if your iPhone is turned off, in Airplane Mode, or out of cellular range when the delivery time arrives.

Requirements and Limitations

  • iMessage Only: Send Later currently only works with iMessage (blue bubble conversations). It does not support standard SMS or MMS messages sent to Android users.
  • Group Chats: It functions in both individual conversations and group iMessage threads, provided all participants are on iMessage.
  • Timeframe: Messages can be scheduled up to 14 days ahead.

How to Schedule a Message

  1. Open the Messages app and select an existing iMessage conversation or start a new one.
  2. Tap the + (plus) icon to the left of the text field.
  3. Tap More if necessary, then select Send Later.
  4. Use the time and date picker bubble that appears above the keyboard to choose your preferred delivery time.
  5. Type your text into the message box.
  6. Tap the blue Send arrow. The message will not be delivered immediately; instead, it will appear in the chat thread enclosed within a dashed blue line, indicating it is queued.

Editing or Canceling a Scheduled Message

Before the scheduled time arrives, you have full control over the queued message directly inside the chat thread:

  • Edit Text: Tap Edit above the scheduled bubble to change the text content.
  • Reschedule Time: Tap the time indicator to select a new delivery date or time.
  • Send Immediately: Tap the options menu to override the timer and send the message right away.
  • Delete: Tap the options menu and choose Delete Message to cancel the delivery entirely.
