How to Rewrite Text Tone in iOS 18 Mail and Messages
Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 introduces system-wide Writing Tools that allow you to rewrite text and adjust its tone directly within apps like Mail and Messages. This feature helps refine your communication by transforming your original draft into distinct styles—such as Professional, Friendly, or Concise—with just a few taps.
Requirements
To use Writing Tools tone adjustments, you need an Apple Intelligence-compatible device (such as an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model) running iOS 18.1 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on in your device settings.
How to Adjust Tone in Mail or Messages
- Draft Your Message: Open the Mail or Messages app and type out your text as you normally would.
- Select the Text: Double-tap or highlight the specific words, sentences, or paragraphs you want to adjust. Alternatively, leave all text unselected to adjust the entire draft.
- Open Writing Tools:
- In the pop-up editing menu above your selection, tap Writing Tools.
- Alternatively, tap the Apple Intelligence icon located directly on the keyboard shortcut bar.
- Choose a Tone: A Writing Tools panel will slide up
displaying several rewriting presets:
- Friendly: Adds warmth, approachable phrasing, and a casual touch to your message.
- Professional: Polishes the wording, corrects informal language, and adopts a formal, business-appropriate tone.
- Concise: Trims excess filler words to make the communication direct and brief.
- Rewrite: Rephrases the text to improve clarity and flow while keeping the original tone intact.
- Review and Apply: Apple Intelligence will display a preview of the altered text. Tap Done or Replace to apply the changes to your message, or tap Revert to return to your original draft.
