How to Recategorize Senders in iOS 18 Mail

Apple's iOS 18 introduces an on-device categorization system for the Mail app that automatically organizes emails into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. Users can easily recategorize specific senders if an email lands in the wrong section. When you manually move a message to a different category, iOS 18 allows you to apply that change to all future emails from that sender, giving you complete control over your inbox sorting.

How to Change a Sender's Category

To recategorize a sender in the iOS 18 Mail app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to the category currently holding the email (such as Promotions or Updates).
  3. Open the email from the sender you wish to reassign.
  4. Tap the Reply or More Actions button (the arrow or three-dot icon).
  5. Select Move to Category.
  6. Choose the destination category where you want the email to go: Primary, Transactions, Updates, or Promotions.
  7. When prompted, confirm that you want to Always move messages from this sender to the chosen category.

How Future Emails Are Handled

Once you set a custom category for a sender, the Mail app remembers your rule. Subsequent incoming emails from that exact email address will bypass the default algorithmic sorting and route directly to your designated tab.

If you ever change your mind, you can repeat the process at any time by moving an email from that sender to a different tab and updating the preference. This sender-level customization ensures that high-priority newsletters, receipts, or personal messages always appear exactly where you expect them.
