How to Pause Video Recording in iOS 18

Apple’s iOS 18 introduces a native video pause button in the Camera app, allowing users to stop and resume recording within a single session without terminating the clip. Instead of generating separate video files for each shot, the operating system continuously writes all captured footage into a single container file. This article explains how the feature works, why it eliminates the need for post-production clip stitching, and how to use it to combine multiple takes seamlessly.

How the Video Pause Feature Works

Prior to iOS 18, stopping a video recording automatically finalized the media file and saved it to the Photos library. Capturing a different angle, scene, or take required starting a completely new recording, resulting in multiple distinct video files that had to be manually combined using video editing software.

In iOS 18, the Camera interface includes a dedicated pause button alongside the standard stop button during active video recording. When you press pause:

  1. The capture stream suspends: The active camera sensor and microphone inputs temporarily stop writing data, and the recording timer halts.
  2. The file container remains open: Unlike pressing the stop button, pausing does not close the metadata header or finalize the video file format (MOV or MP4).
  3. The preview remains live: The viewfinder stays active, allowing you to reframe your subject, change angles, or switch between cameras.
  4. Data appending resumes: Tapping the record button again resumes writing frames directly behind the previously recorded segment within the exact same file.

Once you tap the square stop button, the operating system writes the final metadata and saves the entire sequence as one consolidated video file in the Photos app.

Key Benefits of In-Camera Takes

  • Zero Post-Processing: There is no need to import multiple clips into apps like iMovie, Final Cut, or CapCut simply to join them together.
  • Storage Efficiency: Stitching clips in third-party editors often creates duplicate media files and cache data. Pausing writes directly to a single file, conserving iPhone storage.
  • Seamless Playback: The transitions between paused segments function as clean, instant jump cuts, making it ideal for tutorials, vlogs, stop-motion style clips, and multi-angle demonstrations.

How to Record Multiple Takes into One File

  1. Open the Camera app on an iPhone running iOS 18.
  2. Swipe to the Video mode.
  3. Tap the red Shutter button to start recording.
  4. When you finish your first take, tap the Pause button (indicated by two vertical bars) located on the side of the screen.
  5. Reframe your shot, reposition your subject, or adjust camera settings.
  6. Tap the red Record button to resume recording your next take. Repeat this process as many times as needed.
  7. Tap the square Stop button to end the session and save the combined video to your Photos library.
