How to Lock the Journal App in iOS 18
Apple’s Journal app in iOS 18 supports biometric authentication, allowing you to protect your private reflections using Face ID or Touch ID. Securing your journal ensures that even if someone else is using your unlocked iPhone, your personal thoughts, photos, and voice recordings remain completely inaccessible without your biometric approval. This guide explains how biometric protection works and the exact steps to enable it.
Enabling Biometric Authentication for Journal
You can protect your journal entries using the built-in lock feature located in your iPhone settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 18.
- Scroll down and select Journal.
- Tap on Lock Journal and enter your iPhone passcode to proceed.
- Toggle on the Require Face ID (or Require Touch ID) option.
- Tap Require Passcode to choose a time delay. Selecting Immediately ensures the app locks instantly every time you switch away from it or close it.
Once configured, the Journal app will automatically prompt for Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode before revealing your timeline or entries.
Using the iOS 18 System-Wide App Lock
iOS 18 also introduces an operating-system-level app lock that can be applied directly from your Home Screen:
- Locate the Journal app icon on your Home Screen or in the App Library.
- Touch and hold the icon until the quick actions menu appears.
- Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID).
- Confirm your selection.
Privacy and Data Security
When biometric locking is active, notifications and previews from the Journal app are hidden from the Lock Screen and Notification Center. Furthermore, all journal entries remain protected by end-to-end encryption when synced with iCloud, meaning Apple cannot read your entries even if they are backed up to the cloud.
