How to Limit Calendar Access in iOS 18
Apple's iOS 18 introduces granular calendar privacy controls, allowing users to share only specific calendar data with third-party applications rather than granting unrestricted access to their entire schedule. This update closes a longstanding privacy gap by offering a dedicated "Limited Access" tier alongside the traditional full access and event-write options, giving users complete control over which events and schedules an app can read.
The Three Tiers of Calendar Access
When an app requests permission to interact with your schedule in iOS 18, or when you configure permissions manually, you are presented with three distinct levels of access:
- Full Access: The app can view, edit, and create events across every calendar synced to your device, including personal, family, and work accounts.
- Limited Access: You manually select which specific calendars the app is allowed to see. The app remains completely unaware of events on any unselected calendars.
- None: The app cannot view or interact with any calendar data on the device.
(Note: Certain apps may also support an Add Events Only permission, which allows them to write new entries to your calendar without reading your existing schedule.)
How Limited Access Works
Under the Limited Access setting, iOS creates a restricted sandbox for the application. For example, if you maintain separate calendars for "Work," "Personal," and "Fitness," you can permit a third-party workout tracking app to view only your "Fitness" calendar. The application cannot detect the existence of your "Work" or "Personal" calendars, nor can it see the events scheduled within them.
Whenever an app requests access for the first time, iOS 18 displays an updated system prompt offering the option to select specific calendars immediately, rather than forcing an all-or-nothing decision.
How to Manage Calendar Permissions
You can view and modify these privacy settings at any time by following these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Privacy & Security.
- Select Calendars.
- Tap the name of the app you want to configure.
- Select Limited Access.
- Tap the specific calendars you want to share with the app (indicated by a checkmark), and uncheck any calendars you want to keep private.
Any changes made in this menu take effect immediately, cutting off or granting visibility without requiring the app to be reinstalled.
