How to Limit Battery Charge to 80% in iOS 18

Apple's iOS 18 introduces granular charging controls designed to extend long-term battery lifespan by preventing your device from sitting at maximum capacity. This guide explains how to access the updated battery management settings on supported iPhone models and configure your device to stop charging once it reaches 80 percent.

Supported Devices

The option to customize your charge limit is available exclusively on the iPhone 15 series and iPhone 16 series running iOS 18. Older models still feature standard Optimized Battery Charging, but lack the manual percentage slider.

Steps to Set the 80% Charge Limit

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Battery.
  3. Select Charging.
  4. You will see a slider with options ranging from 80% to 100% in 5% increments (80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, 100%). Drag the slider all the way to the left to select 80%.

Once selected, your iPhone will stop charging automatically when it hits the 80% threshold.

Why Limit Charging to 80%

Lithium-ion batteries experience the most chemical stress when completely depleted or fully charged to 100%. Capping your daily charge at 80% reduces heat generation and degradation, keeping your battery healthy for a longer period.

Note: Even with an 80% limit active, iOS may occasionally charge to 100% to recalibrate the battery's state-of-charge estimates.
