How to Identify Slow Charging in iOS 18
Apple's iOS 18 introduces a dedicated system to alert users when their iPhone is connected to an underpowered power adapter or wireless pad. By checking the battery settings, users can immediately identify whether their current setup is charging slower than optimal through distinct color changes in graphs and explicit text notifications.
The Orange Battery Graph
The primary visual indicator appears inside the Settings app under the Battery menu. In previous versions, the battery level graph showed all charging periods in green. In iOS 18, if the system detects that the charger is supplying suboptimal power, the line and bar on the graph during that charging period turn orange (amber) instead of green.
If the device switches between fast and slow charging during the same session, the graph reflects this with alternating sections of green and orange to indicate exactly when the slowdown occurred.
The "Slow Charger" Warning Label
Alongside the orange graph, iOS 18 displays a written notification directly below the Battery Level chart. When a slow charging connection is active or has recently occurred within the selected time window (Last 24 Hours or Last 10 Days), a text label reading "Slow Charger" appears.
Next to this label is an information icon (i). Tapping
this icon opens a support prompt explaining that the connected accessory
provides less power than the device supports and recommends using a
higher-wattage charger for faster charging speeds.
What Triggers the Indicators
These visual warnings typically appear when charging at speeds of 7.5W or lower. Common triggers include:
- Standard 5W Apple USB power bricks.
- Basic Qi wireless charging pads capped below MagSafe standards.
- Computer USB ports with low power output.
- Multi-port hubs or car chargers splitting low wattage across multiple devices.
