How Tap to Cash Works in iOS 18 Apple Wallet

With the release of iOS 18, Apple introduced Tap to Cash, a peer-to-peer payment feature built into Apple Wallet that lets users send and receive Apple Cash simply by bringing two iPhones together. This article explains how the underlying technology works, outlines the step-by-step process for making a payment, and highlights the security and privacy benefits that make instant physical-proximity transactions safe and frictionless.

The Underlying Technology

Tap to Cash relies on Near Field Communication (NFC) combined with Apple’s proximity-sensing framework, similar to NameDrop. When two compatible devices running iOS 18 are placed near one another, they establish an encrypted, short-range connection.

Transactions are processed directly through the user’s Apple Cash balance. The feature handles authorization locally using the iPhone's Secure Element and Apple’s payment infrastructure, eliminating the need to search for contacts, scan QR codes, or manually enter personal account details.

How to Send Money Using Tap to Cash

Initiating a payment is fast and requires only a few inputs:

  1. Open the Wallet app on an iPhone running iOS 18.
  2. Tap the Apple Cash card.
  3. Tap Send or Request, then choose Tap to Cash.
  4. Enter the dollar amount you wish to transfer.
  5. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  6. Hold the top of your iPhone near the top of the recipient's iPhone.

Once the devices detect each other, an on-screen prompt appears with an audio chime and haptic feedback. The recipient reviews the incoming amount and confirms the transfer to finalize the transaction. Funds transfer instantly to the recipient's Apple Cash card.

Privacy and Security Protections

A key advantage of Tap to Cash over traditional peer-to-peer payment apps is privacy. Standard digital transfers often require revealing a phone number, email address, or unique account handle. Tap to Cash eliminates this requirement entirely:

  • No Personal Data Exchange: Neither party sees the other’s phone number, email address, or full Apple ID profile.
  • Cryptographic Verification: Every transaction generates a one-time cryptographic token through the Secure Element, preventing replay attacks and unauthorized intercepts.
  • Biometric Authorization: Payments cannot be transmitted accidentally; the sender must authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID prior to initiating the physical tap.

Requirements

To use Tap to Cash, both the sender and the receiver must have:

  • An iPhone running iOS 18 or later.
  • Apple Cash set up and verified within Apple Wallet.
  • Sufficient balance in Apple Cash (or a linked debit card capable of funding Apple Cash).
  • Two-factor authentication enabled on their Apple IDs.
