How Icon Resizing Changes iOS 18 Home Screen Grid
In iOS 18, Apple introduced the ability to resize app icons and widgets directly on the Home Screen, significantly altering how surrounding grid items behave. When an icon or widget is resized, the iOS 18 layout engine dynamically adjusts adjacent items by pushing them downward or outward to accommodate the larger footprint, while taking advantage of the operating system's new freeform placement system. This article explains precisely how expanding or shrinking items affects the surrounding grid items on your Home Screen.
Dynamic Displacement When Expanding
When you long-press an app icon or widget to convert it into a larger format—such as turning a standard 1x1 app icon into a 2x2, 2x4, or 4x4 widget—the item claims more grid slots on the screen.
To make space for the larger footprint:
- Horizontal and Vertical Push: Surrounding icons directly to the right or below the expanding item are pushed to the next available grid positions. The system preserves the reading order (left-to-right, top-to-bottom) of the displaced items.
- Preservation of Intent: iOS 18 attempts to keep items in their relative positions. If an icon is placed directly below the resizing item, it drops down by the exact number of rows the expanded widget now occupies.
- Page Overflow: If expanding an item causes icons at the bottom of the screen to run out of available grid slots, those displaced icons are automatically bumped onto the next Home Screen page to prevent overlapping.
Behavior When Shrinking Items
Shrinking a widget back into a smaller widget or a standard 1x1 app icon behaves differently than expansion due to iOS 18’s support for open spaces.
- Creation of Empty Space: In previous iOS versions, the grid automatically pulled up lower icons to fill any empty space. In iOS 18, shrinking an item leaves the freed-up grid slots vacant.
- Static Grid Positions: Surrounding icons do not automatically snap back or shift upward to fill the void. Icons that were previously pushed down or moved to accommodate a larger widget will remain in their displaced positions until you manually drag them back.
Interaction with the Freeform Grid
iOS 18 allows users to place app icons and widgets anywhere on the grid without forcing them to snap to the top-left corner. When resizing an item, this freeform arrangement dictates the outcome:
- If there is sufficient blank space directly around an icon, resizing it into a widget will simply fill the adjacent empty slots without displacing any nearby items.
- If surrounding items occupy the required space, collision detection activates, displacing only the conflicting icons while leaving untouched items elsewhere on the page in their exact custom coordinates.
