How iOS 18 Saves Call Audio and Transcripts in Notes
Apple’s iOS 18 introduces native phone call recording and automated live transcription directly through the Phone and Notes apps. When a call recording ends, iOS automatically compiles the audio file alongside a synchronized text transcript and archives it directly into the Notes app. This article explains how iOS 18 organizes, formats, and stores these files so you can easily locate, review, and manage your recorded conversations.
The Automatic "Call Recordings" Folder
When you complete your first recorded call, the Notes app automatically generates a dedicated folder titled Call Recordings.
You do not need to manually save or name the file. As soon as the call disconnects:
- The system pushes the entire session directly to this folder.
- A new note is generated using the contact’s name (or phone number) along with the date and time of the call as the default title.
- The note syncs across your Apple devices via iCloud, provided you have iCloud Notes enabled.
Note Layout: Audio and Text Integration
Inside each generated note, iOS 18 formats the captured data into an integrated, interactive layout:
- Embedded Audio Player: At the top of the note, you will find an inline media player containing the full audio file. You can play, pause, scrub forward, or skip backward in 15-second increments.
- Full-Length Transcript: Beneath or alongside the audio attachment, the complete written transcript appears. The text is synchronized with the audio playback, highlighting sentences in real time as the recording plays.
- Apple Intelligence Summary: On devices compatible with Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 series), an automated summary is placed directly above the transcript. This section outlines the key points and actionable items discussed during the call.
Searching and Exporting Transcripts
Because the data lives within the Notes ecosystem, it benefits from standard iOS indexing:
- Full-Text Search: You can search for specific words, phrases, or names using either the search bar in the Notes app or system-wide Spotlight Search. The system queries both the note titles and the full body of the transcript.
- Exporting Options: Tapping the Share icon allows you to export the note as a PDF, copy the transcript text to the clipboard, or send the audio file directly to other apps such as Voice Memos, Files, or Mail.
- Editing Capabilities: You can add standard note elements—such as checklists, typed annotations, scans, or drawings—directly into the same note containing the call recording.
