How iOS 18 Reminders Auto-Categorizes Grocery Lists

Apple’s Reminders app in iOS 18 streamlines shopping by automatically grouping items into intuitive sections like Produce, Dairy, and Bakery as you add them. Powered by on-device intelligence, this feature eliminates the need to manually sort your shopping list, helping you navigate store aisles efficiently. This article explains how the grocery categorization system works, how to activate it, and how to customize item placements to suit your shopping habits.

How the Auto-Categorization Engine Works

When a list is designated as a Grocery list, the Reminders app uses an on-device machine learning model to parse the text of each entry. The system compares the item name against a localized database of thousands of common grocery products, ingredients, and household supplies.

Once identified, the item is instantly routed into an appropriate section. For example:

  • Apples, spinach, or onions are moved to Produce.
  • Milk, cheddar, or butter are routed to Dairy, Eggs & Cheese.
  • Chicken breast or ground beef automatically file under Meat.
  • Bread, bagels, or tortillas are categorized as Bakery.
  • Paper towels or dish soap fall into Household Items.

Because the processing happens entirely on-device, items are categorized instantaneously without requiring an internet connection, keeping your data private.

Setting Up a Grocery List

To utilize auto-categorization, a list must be explicitly configured as a grocery list:

  1. Open the Reminders app.
  2. Tap Add List in the bottom-right corner (or edit an existing list by tapping the three dots and choosing Show List Info).
  3. Name your list.
  4. Tap the List Type dropdown menu and select Groceries.
  5. Choose a language for the list if prompted, then tap Done.

Any items entered into this list will now automatically sort into their respective categories instead of appearing in a standard chronological list.

Reordering and Custom Categorization

The categorization system adapts to your personal preferences. If an item is placed in an unexpected section—or if a store's layout requires a different organization—you can manually adjust it:

  • Drag and Drop: Drag an item and drop it into the preferred section header.
  • Menu Selection: Tap an item, open its detail view, and manually change the Section assignment.

iOS 18 remembers these manual adjustments. If you reassign an item like "Almond Milk" from Dairy to Beverages, the Reminders app will remember your choice and automatically route it to Beverages the next time it is added.

Managing Sections

Sections appear dynamically; an empty category will not display on your screen until an item belonging to that category is added. Once items are checked off, they move to the completed section, keeping the active list clean. You can also manually add custom sections by tapping the three dots in the top-right corner and selecting Manage Sections to further customize your shopping layout.
