How iOS 18 Photos Combines Grid and Collections

Apple's iOS 18 introduces the biggest redesign to the Photos app to date by replacing the traditional bottom-tab bar with a unified, single-view layout. Instead of forcing users to switch between separate tabs for Library, Albums, and Search, the new interface integrates your complete media grid and automated thematic collections onto one continuously scrollable page. This article explains how this unified design operates, how navigation bridges the library and collections, and how the new architecture streamlines photo browsing.

A Single Vertical Continuum

In iOS 18, the Photos app is structured as a vertical stack. When you launch the app, the top half of the screen displays your chronological photo grid, while the bottom half reveals the beginning of your collections.

Rather than isolating folders and albums into distinct sub-menus, everything lives on this shared canvas. Swiping downward expands your photo grid to fill the entire display, letting you scroll back through your complete library by years, months, or all photos. Swiping upward smoothly transitions the view away from the full grid and slides your curated collections into focus.

The Dynamic Photo Grid

The upper section serves as your primary media archive. At any point, you can drag the screen down to make the grid take over full-screen viewing.

Apple integrates direct filtering controls directly into this grid. A filter icon at the bottom of the grid allows you to instantly sort by favorites, filter out clutter like screenshots or shared photos, and switch between chronological views. When you scroll back up to the top or pull down slightly, the boundary between the grid and the collections returns, maintaining context without interrupting your browsing flow.

Curated Collections Below the Fold

Scrolling down past the initial grid brings you into the Collections section. Collections automatically organize your images into distinct thematic categories, including:

  • Recent Days: Chronologically groups daily activities, filtering out utilitarian clutter like receipts and screenshots.
  • People & Pets: Surfaces recognized faces with rapid access to individual profiles.
  • Trips: Automatically clusters vacation and travel photography.
  • Memories and Featured Photos: Generates dynamic slideshows and curated highlight reels.
  • Media Types and Utilities: Keeps technical categories—such as RAW images, videos, hidden items, and duplicates—readily accessible.

Each collection functions as an interactive shelf. Swiping horizontally across a collection lets you preview items within that group, while tapping the collection title opens a dedicated, expanded view.

Seamless Transitions and Customization

The integration relies on fluid gesture physics. Tapping back from any individual collection or photo glides you immediately back to your exact position on the unified home screen.

To prevent the single page from becoming cluttered, iOS 18 includes deep customization options at the very bottom of the view. Users can tap a "Customize & Reorder" button to hide categories they do not use, pin frequent albums to the top, and rearrange the order of collections so the most relevant media sits directly beneath the main photo grid.
